NHMRC Open Access Policy

NHMRC aims to ensure the widest possible dissemination of the research supported by NHMRC funding in the most effective manner and at the earliest opportunity. The NHMRC also supports the F.A.I.R. policy statement.

In 2022, the NHMRC updated their Open Access Policy by:

  • removing the 12-month grace period before making a publication open access, requiring immediate open access on publication
  • requiring use of open licensing so that publications can be used and shared widely.

All recipients of NHMRC grants must comply with all elements of the Policy. The implementation dates for Part 1: Publications of the Policy are shown in the following table:

Table: Implementation of the Policy
NHMRC grants Implementation date Additional information
New grants Immediately All publications produced from NHMRC grants awarded under Grant Opportunity Guidelines issued on or after 20 September 2022.
All other NHMRC grants 1 January 2024 All publications produced up to 31 December 2023 must be made open access in a repository or other acceptable location within a 12-month period from the date of publication. This is consistent with the previous version of NHMRC’s Open Access Policy (November 2018; updated April 2020).

The above NHMRC 2022 policy information is taken directly from the NHMRC website.

ARC & NHMRC mandate OA

The Australian Research Council’s Open Access policy (effective from 1st January 2013), requires that any publication arising from an ARC supported research project must be deposited into an open access institutional repository (IR) within 12 months from the date of publication.  The 2017 update of the policy requires that the metadata of the research output should be in the repository within three months of publication.
