"Dressed in stylishly scruffy jeans with a “Free Being Me” T-shirt and spectacles, 18-year-old Julieta was one of dozens of girl guides and girl scouts attending the conference. Each brimming with ideas. Each determined to change the relationship that their friends, relatives and community members have with their own bodies. Their activism had been awakened in part by the efforts of one of the largest companies in the beauty industry: Unilever" (p. 31).

"A white protective wall the full height of the house surrounds Sakura House in southern Tokyo. Mount Fuji Architects Studio strove to create an ambience similar to that of Farnsworth House by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The site is not located in the middle of nature, however, but rather in a densely populated section of the Japanese capital. Creating a transparent building here in which the occupants can live just as casually necessitated that the architects first produce a suitable environment" (p. 34).

Coronavirus and Planetary Health by Howard Frumkin & Samuel Myers

Extract

"During the two years of this book’s gestation, our planet was ringing warning bells with increasing urgency. Intense hurricanes devastated the Caribbean; wildfires raged in California and Australia, Siberia and the Amazon; droughts and civil strife brought famine in the Sahel; and the worst locust outbreak in 70 years destroyed crops in East Africa. Each of these planetary signals warned us that humanity is engaged in a fundamentally risky relationship with our natural systems" (p. 487).
