Generate citations
Word processor plugins
Use Zotero to insert citations in-text and generate reference lists.
MS Word
The plugin for MS Word should be automatically installed, during the Zotero software installation. If it is not available, install it manually.
- To insert a citation, place your cursor where the in-text citation should be inserted.
- From the Zotero tab in the menu, select Add/Edit Citation:
- From the pop-up box, type in a detail from the citation to be inserted, such as an author's name or part of the title:
Alternatively, click the small down arrow next to the red Z within the pop-up box. to browse to the citation within your Zotero library.
Google Docs
Support for citing with Google Docs is installed automatically during the browser connector installation.
- To insert a citation, place your cursor where the in-text citation should be inserted.
- From the Zotero tab in the menu, select Add/Edit Citation:
- From the pop-up box, type in a detail from the citation to be inserted, such as an author's name or part of the title:

Add page numbers to a citation
Page, paragraph, section, etc. numbers can be added to the citation as it is inserted.
- To add numbers to an in-text citation already in the document:
- Click on the citation and select Add/Edit Citation from the Zotero menu.
- Click on the citation within the pop-up window:
- Click the Page drop-down menu to choose a different type of section.
- Type the numbers in and press Enter on the keyboard.
Add reference list
To insert the reference list in your document:
- Place your cursor where you would like the list to appear.
- Click on the Zotero menu tab.
- Choose Insert Bibliography.
A bibliography containing the Zotero references within your document will be created.
Change referencing style
To change referencing styles:
- Click on the Zotero menu tab.
- Choose Document Preferences.
- Select the style you want to use. If it is not available from the list, select Manage Styles to choose from additional styles:
