Plagiarism & Academic Integrity

What is Academic Integrity?

It is important to know about academic Integrity for your individual journey as a student and researcher.

Personal and academic integrity are essential attributes for Bond University students and graduates.

Academic integrity is:

the expectation that teachers, students, researchers and all members of the academic community act with: honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility.’  -- Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA)

An essential aspect of academic integrity is producing your own original work.

In practice, you must learn to reference other people's writing, images, and concepts properly in your assignments.  It is important to learn about and avoid plagiarism and not cheat or enter a contract to cheat or collude with others when creating your assessment pieces.  Breaching academic integrity is also known as academic misconduct or academic dishonesty.

Ensure you understand Academic Integrity and know how to improve your skills to avoid plagiarism in your work by:

  • Completing the Academic Integrity Module to understand the importance of good academic conduct.
  • Learning and practicing excellent reference skills
  • Using Grammarly to check your work for plagiarism
  • Asking for assistance from your faculty librarian or the Academic Skills Centre.

Avoid Plagiarism

Plagiarism occurs when the work of another person, or persons, is used and presented as one's own.

If you include other people’s words, ideas, or materials without proper acknowledgment (such as including an in-text citation, footnote, and reference list entry) you are plagiarising. This is classified as academic misconduct.

The University regards very seriously any acts of cheating, or dishonesty by way of plagiarism and there is a range of penalties that may be imposed on a student for instances of plagiarism.

Bond University uses Turnitin to check student work for plagiarism.

Understanding plagiarism

In the following video staff and students at York St John University in the UK talk about what constitutes plagiarism, how to avoid it, and what is expected in regard to good academic writing.

Learn how to reference

Academic writing requires referencing all the sources of information that you've included in your assignment.  If you have quotes, facts, images, videos, statistics, charts or diagrams, or material from a website in your work you must include a citation in the text, or include a footnote, and compile a reference list.

Complete and accurate referencing enables the reader of your work to easily find your sources and highlights the extent of the research you've undertaken to support your argument or topic.  Importantly, good referencing is an indicator of academic integrity as it indicates that you have endeavored to avoid plagiarism.

The following Library guides have been created to assist you in referencing the most common types of sources in styles used at Bond University.

Make an appointment with your faculty librarian or the Academic Skills Centre to develop your referencing skills and seek assistance.

Check for plagiarism with Grammarly

Use Grammarly's free plagiarism checker to scan your assignment for copied content that has not been cited or referenced.
