Research databases and websites
Databases like Web of Science and Scopus use standardised author identifiers, enabling you to find all works indexed under a specific author, regardless of variations in how their name appears in publications.
- Web of ScienceThere are two methods related to authors:
- Direct searching - use the Researchers search to find publications by a specific author.
- Discovering authors - Search for your topic from the Documents search > Analyze results > Authors.
- ScopusA large abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature and quality web sources. It provides tools to track, analyse and visualise research.
There are two methods relevant for authors:
- Direct searching - Use the Authors search to find publications by a specific author
- Discoverying authors - Search for your topic from the Documents search > Analyze results > Documents by author.
- Google ScholarGo to the menu > Advanced search > enter the name in the Return articles authored by box.
- ORCID
ORCID stands for Open Researcher and Contributor ID. As a personal identifier, it is not connected to any institution and will contain details of publications throughout a researcher's career.
Use the OCRID search box to find a specific author's profile.
Library Search
Library Search
Advanced search
Use the Author/Creator field and the equals exact phrase option in the Advanced Search option in Library Search to find specific authors. However, keep in mind that if an author publishes under variations of their name (e.g., "Miller, Janet" vs. "Miller, Janet K." or "Miller, J.K."), Library Search may not retrieve all their works.
Browse authors
Sometimes you might have a particular book in mind, but can't quite remember the title or the author's name. Use the Browse Search option to help jog your memory. Select Browse Search in the menu at the top of Library Search, then choose Browse by Author and search for the author.
The Browse Search is best used when finding books, ebooks or other materials held in the library by a specific author. For journal articles and other online publications, use the Research databases and websites (add a box link here when ready) options provided.
Related persons trails
You can explore people (not just authors) in Library Search using the Related persons cards that appear in some full records, or by searching for their name and selecting them in the auto-suggest list.
This is a way to see what other titles by an author are in the Library, or to find names of people who are collaborators, or are related in some other way. For example, they have both been written about in the same title.
These cards mostly appear in book records, but following these trails of people can help you identify other names you could search for as authors across various formats.
